Animal Crusaders

The Greater Victoria Animals' Crusaders (G.V.A.C.) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1973. GVAC's main mandate is to provide funding to spay and neuter abandoned and stray cats and dogs in the Greater Victoria area and to also assist low income families with these and other veterinary costs. GVAC also helps with veterinarian costs for injured abandoned and abused animals. Once they are healthy the organization places them into loving permanent homes. GVAC helps over 1,500 companion animals each year!

GVAC is completely supported by volunteer help and financial donations that are tax deductible. No financial help is received from any Government Agency. 100% of all donations go to save animals.

Send a card—save a life

For each greeting card you send to a friend, the folks here at the Castle donate the value of a domestic stamp (54 cents) to help with the vet bills. It's at no cost to you, so you can afford to show your support by sending greetings to all your friends and family!

My rescue animal

The Demon Lord of Kitty Badness was a rescue kitty. He had a rough start and came to me with eye infection, ringworm, and upper respiratory problems. He was a bit too old to be kitten-cute but young enough to be rambunctious—in other words, hard to adopt. Lucky for him, he was a good salescat. When I walked into the shelter, he bounced up onto the scratching post and touched noses, and that was it. He came home and became my resident comic. It took him a long time to settle down and completely trust humans, but now he's curled up on my feet while I write this.

Companion animals are dear to many authors and readers alike, and for good reason. They help keep us healthy with walks and playtime, shower us with affection, and remind us to enjoy the simple blessings in life. Unfortunately, there are far too many furballs that have a hard time getting by. I recently went with a friend to rescue a couple more cats and saw a lot of sad faces waiting for a home.

Realistically, no one can take care of more than a few of these bright sparks. However, we can support those wonderful volunteer organizations that carry on the work of rescuing cats, dogs, and other creatures and placing them in good homes. One of the organizations in my area is the Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders, a wonderful group that saves many, many lives.

Note: value of donations and vet bills are in Canadian funds.
